Sandals or Boots???

I was perusing the Internet the other day and came across this saying that really gave me pause.

I started to think about the difference between my wants and my needs.  Many of times I confuse the two and claim to need absolutely EVERYTHING I see!  If you know me you know that is true.  I've never really grown out of that stage.

When I was in grade school, my younger sister got a pair of sandals for her birthday.  It was May and I really NEEDED those sandals!  I cried all day because it just wasn't fair that I NEVER got any sandals on my birthday -- never mind that my birthday is in December, but I NEVER got sandals and I NEEDED them so badly!  My poor Mom, beside herself by the end of the day, having heard about it all-------day-------long bought me the stupid sandals and I was happy.  Happy for a few weeks until I found the next thing that I NEEDED.

Every year on my sister's birthday I call her and she asks me what I got from Mom!  It's our thing, but I always tell her I got something fabulous that there is no humanly way possible my Mom would ever buy for either of us.  We laugh about it now, but deep down I still feel really rotten and spoiled.

Thankfully, I've grown so much since that time.  For example, now I know that I don't really NEED sandals.  I need boots!  THESE boots!

Aren't they fabulous!?!

What are your wants vs. needs?

  2. What an awesome quote: If you want something you never had, you'll have to do something you've never done. This is going on my pinterest page. I love this quote. My wants always seem to out outweigh my needs. That is why I stop going into the mall because my wants started taking the best of me. I bought items that I never wore that I thought I would and I spent money on items that I really should not have. The holidays have come around and I now a firm believer that it is better to give than receive. There are many people in need this holiday season so I can only do my best to help out some of them.

    1. I agree Serena -- giving back is one of the ways that I bring the holiday spirit into my home! My kids need a nice slice of SHARING!

  3. Having no money has REALLY clarified wants vs. needs. I closed my business a few years ago - thinking I'd start something else after a little break. Then the economy went in the toilet and my mom got cancer. She beat it (there's another good perspective check on want vs need) but I have become her caregiver... with no paycheck at all. It's been very tight financially. The interesting thing is although I first found it painful to "do without" things I THOUGHT I needed, I soon came to realize how very little I actually need. And much of the "wants" seem unimportant now. Someone asked me what I wanted for Christmas recently and I was stumped - there was little I needed that would fit in a box (and she can't buy me good health, happiness or pay my bills) so it took me a while to consider what I might just "want" . I finally thought of a few things, but I'm really okay if I don;t have them.

    1. Thanks so much for sharing LA -- once you don't have much you are right -- you really don't miss it all that much either! Your health is number 1 for sure (another thing you don't really cherish until you don't have it -- see my post from today!)

  4. Awesome story. I think we've all been through this as a child, and even as a parent...now I'm on the other end of it. Thank you for making me realize we all need to think a little more about our needs, more than our wants.

  5. This was too cute! I completely understand. I wanted a lot as a child, but I knew not to ever ask and especially not to demand. Now, I have my own family, and my kids "NEED" everything they see. My oldest is not so bad. She has a job and is in college. My middle child is a totally different story! She has to have everything, and right when she says. It doesn't happen very often (that she gets her way), but she still demands every chance she gets. My youngest is still too small to know how to demand much yet. I pray he is not too bad about it when he learns what "wants/needs" are. Thanks for the cute story!

  6. Leona I so understand where you're coming from! My second one is me at that age times 3!!! I wonder if it's a birth order thing? What else can I blame it on?! :)
