It was a kinder, gentler time back in 1983 -- Ronald Reagan was President, John O. Marsh was Secretary of State and Caspar Weinberger was the Secretary of the Army. The biggest conflict the United States had was with a place called Granada. It was a few years before Oliver North and the Iran-Contra Affair.
1983 was the year I joined the Army. I quit my not-so-lucrative job at a printing factory in rural Minnesota and enlisted. My friends were certain I had lost my mind and my parents thought I would be home within a week. I shipped off to Fort McClellan, Alabama on a cold morning in February. It was a day that changed my life forever.
If you know a Veteran, be sure to thank them today. Tonight when you go to bed be sure to include those men and women serving in the military in your prayers.
Our troops are awesome, and I will be sure to say a prayer for their safety tonight!
