What Happened to My Docile Puppy?!

You did your research and decided on what you think is the best purebred or mixed breed dog for you and your family. You bring the adorable little puppy home. In the beginning it sleeps a lot, then it begins to be more playful and curious. Before long, that docile puppy becomes whirlwind of activity, full of energy, requiring constant observation and demanding attention. You quickly realize you're going to have to establish some rules and a form of communication with your puppy.

Obedience training is one of the best ways to establish an effective communication system with your puppy. While there are some generalizations that can be made regarding effective training methods for a puppy, each breed or combination of breeds is different. Every puppy has its unique personality traits. One of the best ways to open up a line of communication with your puppy is to enroll it in an obedience training program. As you learn more about programs such as K-9 Companions, you will recognize the importance of having professionals assist you and your dog with training techniques and communication skills.

There are many advantages to enrolling your puppy in an obedience and home management program. If you plan to take you puppy out and about with you, it needs to understand and respond to certain commands that make it a well-mannered, socialized traveling companion. You also want your puppy to behave nicely when you have visitors. Learning boundaries such as staying inside a door or gate until you verbally release them is a huge safety measure for your dog.

As soon as you bring your puppy home, you need to introduce it to an area of your house that will become its personal space. Dogs need a quiet area to retreat to whenever they want to nap or simply be an observer of household activity rather than a participant. The command "place" is your dog's cue to go to its designated area. This is a command you might want to use when guests first arrive or when you declare quiet time for everyone in the house.
