National Unplug Night with your Family! #UnPlugwithCarrom

If your family is anything like mine, you find that spending "quality" time together often means sitting in the same room and everyone looking at their phones! Whether you or your kids are on-line or texting, there's way too much media time and not enough face time. It's time to unplug and spending time together!

The Carrom Company can help you accomplish some actual face time! October 16 is National Unplug Night in your living room! It's time to unplug your TV and other forms of media and spend time playing games the good way: up close and together as a family unit.

The Carrom Company started in 1889 when Henry Haskell, a Sunday School teacher, saw an alarming number of boys hanging out at pool rooms (a place he saw as less than wholesome!)  Mr. Haskell invtended the US Carrom game board that was produced at Ludington Novelty Works in Ludington, Michigan. In the 1900's Ludington Novelty Works and Archarena Company of Peoria, Illinois merged and became Carrom-Archarena Co.

By the 1910's a wealthy industrialist purchased and interest in the company and became the president. Henry Haskell was the secretary. They changed the name to the Carrom Company in 1914.

In the 1930's they introduced the Carrom Baseball board game. They also started to manufacture furniture. This endeavor almost bankrupted the company.  During the 1940's Carrom made large folding tables to display maps for the military while in the field. Over the course of the coming years, the company went through growing pains and in the 1990's their manufacturing operation moved back to Ludington. Carrom Company purchased the assets of a bankrupt competitor and moved the production of their air powered hockey, foosball and pool tables to Ludington, which created the Carrom Sports division. Ironically, the game of pool that Mr. Haskell sought to avoid had come full circle!

Carrom offers lots of amazing games in all sizes from table top to a full-sized free throw dual basketball game!  They sent me their Shuffleboard game.

This sturdy, well-made game is almost a full 45 inches long, almost 13 inches wide, 1.5 inches high and weighs 12 pounds. It is quality personified. I love that it is portable, so we can play it outside or in - we can take it to the park or on vacation with us. My teenagers even like playing it and so do their friends. I have it set up right on our dining room table, where it gets the most use!

Since this game is out and handy, I find that my boys challenge each other to the best of 3 much more often than they would if they had to go to the basement to use it. We often have quick matches before dinner too. I love that it gets us talking and involved!

The game pieces are made of high quality roller-bearings, so the slide is very easy. They spin right in the plastic biscuit. This game will last for years since it is made with a solid wood frame. I love that it's easy for all ages (with the exception of the very young kids who like to put these small parts in their mouth). Grandma and Grandpa, Mom and Dad, teenagers and tweens alike!

Carrom offers many games that you can find on their website HERE. You can also find Carrom on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest. In my opinion these games are worth their weight in gold! I am grateful to Carrom for sponsoring this post and giving my family the chance to reconnect face-to-face!

What will your family do to Unplug on October 16? #UnPlugwithCarrom

  1. What a fun game. I think this is a great idea and should be done more often than just one night.
