Add some versatility to your spring wardrobe!

If you only buy one new item to launch your wardrobe into spring and summer, it should be a wonderfully-versatile sarong. These clever garments have become very popular, both as a convenient cover-up for the beach or on a cruise, as well as for a distinctly different and sexy ensemble for a formal or dressy affair. There are some great sarongs found from artisans and boutiques, but perhaps the best selections are those found from online merchants.

The sarong has an interesting history, and has long been worn by both men and women in Africa, Asia, and India. The traditional batik material provides a comfortable and functional fabric for the wearer, often hand-dyed and crafted. This same legacy and attention to function is embraced by many contemporary manufacturers and merchants, particularly with the growing popularity that the sarong has found among wearers.

The fabric of the sarong has much to do with its ability to adapt to a variety of styles and ways it is worn. The material must be supple and flexible enough to drape or knot as desired, while also sturdy enough to hold up to the colorful dyes and to not appear opaque. The favored fabrics for the sarong historically has been cotton, which remains a popular choice among many current buyers. New selections have expanded their collections to include silks, nylons, and even polyesters, and some may offer organic options such as bamboo or hemp fabric, which is ideal for garments like the sarong.

The burning question remains: how do I wear my sarong? The answer is simple: however you like! Many may rely on these garments as a cover-up or clever addition to a swimsuit or bikini. Others may prefer the accessorizing value of the sarong, wearing theirs as a shawl, scarf, or ornament to other attire. The fact is, a sarong can be an entire ensemble all on its own, when it is draped and tied appropriately. A true sarong can become a casual cocktail dress, or a floor-length skirt when wrapped and worn in a distinct manner. Some wearers may find that augmenting their sarong with coordinating broaches or pins allows them more versatility and security during wear, without relying on bulky knots that may not provide the silhouette and look sought.

However you opt to wear them, the simple sarong is the season's best investment garment. Affordably-priced and full of potential, a sarong may likely become an integral component of the season's wardrobe for many individuals.

  1. These really are versatile, I grew up in southern California and my mom insisted that my sister and I wore sarongs over our suits when we'd leave the beach. We didn't argue though, because we loved changing it up.
